Description

As the 16th century draws to a close, Philip II rules Spain, but English pirates acting with the quiet approval of Queen Elizabeth disturb his calm. In 1588, after his patience runs out, Philip II equips a huge fleet, the “Invincible Armada”, intended to bring England to its knees. From the moment of this fateful decision, Spanish soldiers and sailors face one difficulty after another, until it seems that the whole world, including the weather, has turned against them. Faster and more manoeuvrable English ships deal forcefully with the approaching threat, and fewer than half of the 130 Spanish vessels return home. It takes the English almost another hundred years to become rulers of the seas, but the first seed has been planted. This Czech-language publication covers the political, diplomatic and economic aspects of the conflict, as well as naval technology and the battles of the period. It includes numerous illustrations, maps and a list of the participating ships, including the Armada wrecks identified to date.
