Married couple Tom and Rachel Sullivan, their thirteen-year-old daughter Holly, and their dog Buster leave London for a luxury mountain lodge by a lake in Scotland, owned by their mutual friend and Tom's boss, Lionel. Tom and Rachel recently lost their sixteen-year-old son Michael, who died in a car accident along with his girlfriend Fiona. Michael was driving his father's car without a license and took the car without his father's knowledge. Tom is struggling to cope with his son's recklessness. Rachel, on the other hand, tries to defend Michael's failure and wants to forgive him. Tension arises between the couple, which Tom addresses by leaving the family.
