The cycle of stories from the 1930s draws from real cases of the Regional Court in Olomouc. Judge Klepítko wants to judge not only according to the laws but longs to penetrate as deeply as possible into the often strange and hidden motives that led the perpetrators to their actions. He is assisted by his Jewish friend - court graphologist Aron Weisel. He is an eccentric and somewhat cynical old bachelor, a professor at a classical gymnasium, educated, contemplative, and knowledgeable about the new fashionable science - depth psychology. Deep psychological causes emerge as to why people commit evil, as old as the world itself. Sometimes even positive character traits can lead to crime. Conversely, seemingly hopeless situations carry within them the seed of a turn for the better. Between 1934 and 1938, the young Czechoslovak Republic grapples with serious problems: economic crisis, national conflicts, growing aggression from the German fifth column in the Sudetenland, the death of President Masaryk, and the rise of the conciliatory diplomat Beneš. The questions hanging over the future of the republic reflect in the fate of some characters, especially graphologist Weisel.
