Description
The story takes place in 1867. The author narrates the tale of the French artist César Cascabel and his family, who, after years spent in the United States, wish to return home to their homeland. Unfortunately, their savings are stolen, preventing them from paying for a ship journey to Europe. Therefore, César Cascabel decides to reach France by land on a traveling theater wagon through (then still Russian) Alaska (which was sold in 1867 by the Tsarist government to the U.S. government, a fact that influences the plot of the novel), further across the frozen Bering Strait, Siberia, and central Russia, believing that his expedition will earn money through performances along the way, thereby improving their financial situation.
