Description
This adventure novel is the first part of a loose trilogy, which also includes Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and The Mysterious Island. The story begins on July 26, 1864, when the crew of the pleasure yacht Duncan catches a hammerhead shark in the strait between Ireland and Scotland. Inside it, they discover a bottle containing three letters that have the same content, but each is written in a different language – French, English, and German. Moreover, they are significantly damaged by water, making their deciphering even more complicated. The letters contain a message about the ship Britannia's shipwreck at 37° 11' south latitude. The yacht's owner, Lord Glenarvan, does not hesitate for a second and sets off with his wife, Captain John Mangles, Major Mac Nabb, absent-minded geographer Jacques Paganel, and Mary and Robert Grant on an adventurous rescue expedition. This actually means sailing around the globe along the 37th parallel of south latitude... The author has woven many geographical, natural science, and ethnographic insights into this elaborate and adventurous story.
