Description
By a fateful combination of unfortunate circumstances, young naval officer Edmond Dantes is imprisoned without trial in the cruel dungeon of the Château d'If. After fourteen years of despair and hopelessness, a glimmer of hope appears. After the death of his only friend, Abbé Faria, he disguises himself in the priest's robe and is thrown into the sea. The escape is successful, and Dantes plans his revenge on all those who have wronged him. The Count of Monte Cristo is, along with The Three Musketeers, one of Dumas's most significant and well-known works, in which the author masterfully depicts the colorful history of France in the first half of the nineteenth century while critically pointing out the ills of contemporary society, which are almost indistinguishable from those of today.
