Description

This novel was published only after Verne's death, when it was revised by his son Michel. The plot unfolds in two lines. The first is a journey along the Danube from its source in southwestern Germany to its mouth in the Black Sea in Romania. The author describes the river itself and a number of cities along its banks. The second line is adventurous. The main character of the narrative is the brave Bulgarian patriot Sergej Ladko, who sets out as the Hungarian fisherman Ilja Bruš, the winner of a fishing competition, and sails down the river to his homeland, where he is to lead a planned national uprising against the Turks. However, along the Danube, a gang of robbers, led by Ivan Striga, is wreaking havoc. The Austrian police commissioner Karol Dragoš is trying to uncover the criminals. Whether Ladko manages to dispel Dragoš's suspicion that he is the sought-after leader of the robbers and whether he can catch the robbers, the reader will find out from the book itself.
