Description
The rapid development of science in the nineteenth century intensified the polarization of philosophical thought. On one side, science was uncritically glorified as the only way to acquire true knowledge, while on the other, it was criticized for not penetrating to the essence of reality. French epistemology at the beginning of the 20th century overcomes this dilemma. It defends the value of science but rejects its positivist image. Representatives of this tradition often rely on the study of the history of science and frequently on the psychological foundations of scientific knowledge. Philosophically, they draw from the Cartesian intellectual heritage and from the transformations of French spiritualist philosophy in the last decades of the 19th century. Today, French epistemology is among the most influential philosophical traditions and forms one of the pillars of the philosophy of science.
