Description
Bonnie and Clyde in Czech, this could briefly characterize Žáček's new novel about the murderer Lecián and his lover. The book about the Terror of Moravia is not a glorification of a murderer. It is merely a rather cruel, almost documentary account of a person who has ruined nearly everything he has touched in life. The author tells the story through old notes, as well as quotes from contemporary articles. At the same time, it is a story of passion, madness, and reckless courage, bordering at times on the idiocy of the main character. Žáček wrote a novel that evokes some works of Karel Čapek and Josef Čapek, with a sense of detachment and a certain degree of misunderstanding towards Lecián and his actions. In fact, the book conveys, on one hand, disgust for a vile murderer, but on the other, a fascination with the evil that struck the Czech lands during the First Republic in the person of the criminal.
