Description
THE MESSAGES to the LOST LAND is indeed about messages. More precisely, it is a novel about the reports that Johannes Hofer sends home about himself and much of what he sees around him, from everywhere his dramatically eventful fate takes him across Europe between 1910 and 1945. This dominant character of the upcoming rich narrative hails from the German Ore Mountains. He moves through the German environment throughout his relatively short life, covering a wide range from the wild Berlin of the early 1930s through the dark era of rising Nazism, the northernmost Bohemia, the Polish front of World War II, and German-occupied Paris, to the closed world of Protectorate Prague. However, the main stage of this story is Poohří and especially Kadaň, where Hofer spends his school and student years, his youth, and to which he also returns at key moments of his story later on. However, the novel's narrative surprisingly does not end with Hofer's violent death in Prague in May 1945, as it instead opens the point of the story and its philosophical mission, projected over a relatively extensive area from the immediate post-war wild expulsion to our times, when we look at the peripeteia of the previous drama with quite different eyes.
