Description

The Second World War was marked not only by death and inhumane treatment of people but also by significant human scientific progress. No other conflict brought such advancements in military technologies, ranging from new types of ammunition to ground-to-ground rockets. Among these weapons, aircraft carriers also found their place, which, for the first time since their inception, were utilized more extensively in this conflict. The most famous were the aircraft carriers of the Japanese and Americans, which clashed in fierce battles in the Pacific. However, what few know is that the Germans were not willing to be left behind. They too began constructing their aircraft carrier, which they symbolically named after the gas-filled giant from a bygone era – Graf Zeppelin. They also developed aircraft with folding wings for this ship. However, just like with other projects, the will and time to fully complete this colossus were lacking. Thus, Graf Zeppelin became an insignificant prop and a demonstration of power that the Germans actually did not possess. This unique topic stems from the author's long-term research in foreign literature and archives. It is supplemented by a number of photographs and map elements, as well as comparative tables and realities about the Nazi navy.
