Description

Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung (1875–1961) is one of those personalities that have been preyed upon by hordes of biographers for decades, with varying degrees of misunderstanding. The release of his fundamental and previously unpublished work, which sheds light on the origins of his psychological theories, is therefore an even greater event. Experts refer to it as the 'key' or even the 'nuclear reactor' of Jung's work. The thick manuscript bound in red leather, named Liber Novus or the Red Book, lay in a safe of a Swiss bank since the death of its creator. Jung's family considered the notes too intimate and fantastical, fearing compromise and rejecting any proposals for publication. It was not until 2000 that British medical historian Sonu Shamdasani managed to negotiate with the heirs for a facsimile of the original Jung manuscript and its publication, accompanied by an insightful commentary and translation of the original Jung text.
