Description
We have changed faith into the right to certainty, when in reality the trinitarian mystery whispers the exact opposite: We are to live in beautiful, terrible humility before reality. In this space, God gives us a searching spirit, a desire for understanding; it seems to me that it is only this constant effort to understand that shapes merciful people – and wise people. ***** If you think you have a right to certainty, then show me where the gospel promises or offers you something like that. The New Testament itself is written in a language that Jesus never spoke. If God wanted us to have evidence, rational justification, and perfect clarity, He would have delayed the incarnation of Jesus until the invention of tape recorders and video cameras. ***** Rational certainty is exactly what Scripture does not offer us. It offers us something much better and a completely different way of knowing: an intimate relationship, a journey through darkness, a path on which we must discover for ourselves that grace, love, mercy, and forgiveness are absolutely essential for survival – in a world always and forever uncertain. You just need enough wisdom and grounding to know how to live without certainty! Yes, we are indeed saved by faith. People living this way will never stop growing, they won't break easily, and it is truly a joy to be with them...
