E. F. Schumacher's book A Guide for the Perplexed presents an extremely interesting attempt to revive philosophy in its original meaning as a love of wisdom, a guide to life, and an approach to the spiritual side. Ernst Friedrich Schumacher (1911–1977) was a British economist of German origin. He studied economics, first in Bonn and Berlin, and then in Britain at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He fled back to England before the Nazi regime. After the war, he participated as an advisor in the restructuring of the German economy. In 1955, he went to Burma as an economic advisor. There, he developed the fundamental principles of so-called Buddhist economics, based on the belief that good work is essential for proper human development and that 'production based on local resources for local needs is the most rational way of managing.' In 1973, he published the book Small is Beautiful – about what the economy would look like if it truly mattered to people and nature; according to The Times, one of the most influential books published since World War II.
