Obtaining higher education has historically brought advantages in the form of better social status and higher-paying jobs. However, especially in the last fifty years, concerns have repeatedly arisen that the growing number of people with university degrees will soon end up not in lucrative jobs but at unemployment offices. Even the recent expansion of the higher education sector that took place across Europe after 2000 did not lead to an inflation of the value of education. Ongoing technological development continues to create enough jobs with high qualification requirements, where fresh graduates can find suitable employment. On one hand, the role of education is influenced by the ongoing expansion of higher education, while on the other hand, it is affected by the accelerating technological turnover. The proportion of female students at universities is significantly increasing, and there is a changing societal pressure for work flexibility. These are just some of the aspects that may influence the role of education during the fourth industrial revolution, which this book addresses.
