Description

The political map of the twenty-first century is characterized by significant differences in political stability, territorial control, and levels of economic development across various regions. In many areas, we observe an increase in activities by both politically and economically motivated violent non-state actors, such as jihadist groups, drug cartels, secessionist movements, or warlords. Although in media shorthand, almost all non-state movements are traditionally associated with the disruption of order and a threat to the surrounding world, the movements themselves are quite diverse, with varied goals and different impacts from their activities. This book presents some key factors through which we can understand the activities of violent non-state actors and applies them to a large number of cases from around the world. All of this is framed within the theory of the new medievalism, which allows readers to better understand the context in which these actors operate. Bohumil Doboš is an assistant professor at the Department of Political Science at the Institute of Political Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University. He primarily focuses on topics related to political geography and geopolitics, such as the territoriality of political actors, the theory of new medievalism, or astropolitics.
