Description
The volume presents translations and adaptations that Jiří Gruša prepared either alone or in collaboration with Karel Kraus and Josef Balvín. These partly known, partly newly accessible adaptations of works by Franz Kafka, R. M. Rilke, Paul Celan, Erich Fried, Sophocles, Emanuel Schikaneder, W. A. Mozart, J. N. Nestroy, Petr Haks, and other authors represent not only a remarkable chapter in the history of Czech translation in the second half of the 20th century but also a unique insight into the formation of Gruša's own literary work. "Above all, until then, I had never encountered such a splendid translation of an opera text into Czech. When I wondered how he could so easily find Czech equivalents..., Gruša mumbled something like, 'when a person pays a little attention to the language and loves it, it must be possible.'" –Jan Klusák
