In the poetic narrative Before Dreams... we follow the life stories of characters from several generations. The main focus is on the lineage of the Kolross family, which has its roots in the Czech town of Čachrov in the Pošumaví region, as well as in the neighboring German town of Jesení. All the fateful decisions of the characters are thus shaped and influenced by the development of Czech-German relations. Petr Kratochvíl skillfully creates an epic mosaic of diverse human characters and destinies that illustrate the dramatic twists of the twentieth century from its first year to its conclusion. Each chapter could be read as a standalone story with its own point, yet they connect as the characters František, Josef, Eliška, and others meet and part over time – leaving Šumava and appearing in Prague, Subcarpathian Rus, and Vienna.
