Description

The stories in Prague Dixieland do not hide the author's Czech origins, even though he has lived in the Netherlands for many years. With Hrabal-like nostalgia and Hašek's humor, he depicts the small Prague characters of the sixties in his own way. The communist regime complicates their lives, but they cope with all the hardships cleverly and with a sense of perspective. They can often be characterized as tricksters, whether they are schoolboys, students, musicians, retirees, editors, receptionists, or unemployed. The collection consists of twelve stories, each set in Prague and representing one month of the year. The compositional inspiration for the author was Vivaldi's Four Seasons. The characters of musicians, often seen as people who do not respect the system or stand outside it, appear not only in the titular story.
