Description
The distinctive character of the space that surrounds us – whether we inhabit it or get to know it while traveling – enters our minds, reflects in artistic expressions, and becomes part of collectively shared images and stories. These likely also influence how we will perceive it in the future. In exploring the relationship between humans and space, this book focuses primarily on landscape, mostly on the landscape of the nineteenth century, when landscape art was born and when it reached its greatest expansion in the fields of Romanticism, Realism, and early Modernism. The theoretical introduction offers reflections on sensory perception of the world, the essence of literary representation of space, and the phenomenon of literary landscape. This is followed by a literary-historical section that outlines the development of landscape painting from the beginnings of the national revival and, from this perspective, tracks the intentions of specific creators and contemporary trends. The author's aim is not only to establish the aspect of landscape as a significant perspective in literary studies but also to attempt a reinterpretation of some canonical works and to remind readers of texts that are generally less known or completely unknown, which nevertheless belong to the 'landscape of Czech literature,' at least due to their remarkable work with literary space.
