Kvadrivium - Čtyři svobodná umění: aritmetika, geometrie, hudba a astronomie – Ashton Anthony (2015)

The basic course at most medieval universities consisted of the study of the seven liberal arts. The lower level (grammar, rhetoric, and dialectic) was called the trivium, while the higher level – the quadrivium – included the study of arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy. The quadrivium can be understood as the study of numbers in relation to space-time: arithmetic deals with pure numbers, geometry with numbers in space, music with numbers in time, and astronomy (cosmology) with numbers in space-time. The book Quadrivium was created as a synthesis of six publications from the Pergamen series, which has systematically mapped human knowledge on the border of science and the mysterious for nearly a decade for the Czech reader. Like the individual titles in the series, it offers attractively designed samples of great themes that do not shy away from mysticism or pure speculation. The individual books have been updated for Quadrivium, supplemented with a number of new chapters, tables, and overviews, and interconnected with a reference apparatus. The book will provide much pleasure to anyone who is not afraid to think about great themes and will welcome a visual guide through their realm accompanied by hundreds of charming illustrations.
