Description
Alva Smith and her two sisters arrive in New York at the end of the 19th century. After the Civil War, they have nothing left but a good name. They meet William Vanderbilt – his family has great wealth, but New York's high society does not accept them as newly rich. Hoping that the union will be mutually beneficial, Alva and William marry. Alva fulfills her part – she gets the Vanderbilt family into the "upper 400" based on the number of guests that can fit into the Astor family's ballroom, even surpassing the queen of society – Mrs. Astor herself. Using the family fortune, Alva advocates for the construction of several important buildings in New York and Newport, where the family has their estate, and famously establishes the Metropolitan Opera – after the Vanderbilts are denied the privilege of renting a box at the Academy of Arts. However, Alva and William's family life is far from as glamorous as their social life. After Alva discovers that her husband is cheating on her with her best friend, she decides to take radical action and asks for a divorce. At that time, this shocking decision is existentially and socially risky for her. Alva emerges victorious from this battle as well, and even remarries – to a good friend of hers...
