This medical book examines prenatal diagnosis, the collective term for the procedures and methods used to diagnose congenital developmental defects in an unborn human being. Prenatal diagnosis now plays a key role in caring for pregnant women. A significant part of prenatal screening currently takes place during the first trimester, so the main chapters logically focus on the gestational period between the 11th and 14th weeks. Some fetal pathologies only become apparent in the second trimester because of their phenotype. Congenital heart defects are a typical example and receive substantial attention in the book. Another important subject is the rapidly developing possibility of non-invasive testing of fetal DNA from maternal serum. The published information reflects current practice. The book serves not only as a suitable teaching aid for pre- and postgraduate education, but above all as a practical guide for colleagues working in many gynaecological clinics.
