Prenatal care in the Czech Republic is reserved for outpatient gynecologists; however, pregnant women often turn to general practitioners or specialists from other fields in situations where they believe their pregnancy-related issues are unrelated, or they may not even be aware of their pregnancy. Medical errors that result in harm or death to the fetus or mother are often highly publicized and perceived particularly negatively by the public. This book aims to help general practitioners navigate obstetric and gynecological issues sufficiently to avoid potential mistakes and, conversely, to alleviate often exaggerated and unfounded fears of possible fetal harm associated with the chosen treatment of pregnant women. It should assist them in distinguishing situations where the difficulties of a pregnant woman can be managed independently and when it is necessary to refer the patient to a specialist. Ten years have passed since the first edition, and due to the ongoing demand for this publication, we have prepared its second updated and expanded edition. The introduction of the book briefly describes the physiological changes during pregnancy and fetal development, followed by a chapter summarizing the current rules of prenatal care in the Czech Republic.
