Patients with MODY diabetes, or maturity-onset diabetes of the young, were until recently a largely overlooked group, scattered without a correct diagnosis among patients with more common types of diabetes. Wider access to genetic testing, the discovery that monogenic diabetes occurs significantly more frequently in the population than originally assumed, and the identification of specific treatment requirements have increased interest in accurate diagnosis. Despite growing awareness among doctors of MODY as a distinct and relatively common subtype of diabetes mellitus, up to 90% of patients with MODY remain undiagnosed and are incorrectly classified and treated, most often as having type 1 or type 2 diabetes, for many years. Correct classification occurs much later, on average after as many as 13 years, and some people with MODY may remain permanently hidden under the label of another type of diabetes. Recognising MODY is highly beneficial for patients because it fundamentally changes the view of their prognosis and often makes it possible to alter the existing approach to diabetes treatment.
