Description

The memoirs of one of the most renowned Czech obstetricians of the last half-century provide a fascinating insight into the development of Czech medicine and society from World War II to the present day. The author's childhood memories return to the First Republic, particularly to the famous sculptural-stonemasonry school in Hořice, which the author's mother graduated from. The period of high school studies is intertwined with the war, the Prague Uprising, and liberation. In the second half of the book, medicine becomes the dominant theme, always against the backdrop of social events. Professor MUDr. Antonín Doležal, DrSc. (born 1929), who spent most of his professional life at the well-known Prague maternity hospital U Apolináře, introduces us to an environment that few of us could glimpse closely. Historically valuable are the specific memories of the many doctors the author encountered throughout his life – classmates from his year, colleagues from the field of gynecology-obstetrics, faculty colleagues, and many others.
