Description
The prevalence of obesity is still rising globally, both in developed and developing countries. Health complications caused by obesity, along with social discrimination, contribute to a diminished quality of life for obese individuals. Obesity affects nearly all social strata of the population and has recently been observed in increasingly younger individuals, including a portion of the child population. Even faster than the rise in obesity prevalence is the rise in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes. Based on this data, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared obesity and type 2 diabetes a pandemic of the 21st century. Over the past few decades, bariatric surgery has not only achieved high technical perfection but has also shifted from procedures performed primarily for aesthetic reasons to addressing conditions of high medical severity. For many doctors, it is surprising that bariatric procedures have the highest long-term success rate of all treatments for type 2 diabetes. However, bariatric treatment of diabetes is effective only at a stage when the body's own insulin secretion is still preserved – and many doctors are still unaware of this.
