Description

Although the beginnings of stereotactic functional neurosurgery can be traced back to the late 1940s, its development began with the introduction of reliable implantable neurostimulators and radiological techniques that allow for precise localization of the target structure for neurostimulation. The principle of lesioning stereotaxy is to create a defined lesion in the target structure, and although this is an irreversible intervention, new targeting systems and techniques that create lesions allow for precise delineation of the location and extent of the lesion, optimizing the effect of the procedure and minimizing its side effects. The book focuses primarily on the therapy of movement disorders in Parkinson's disease, as well as stereotaxy in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, otherwise uncontrollable psychiatric disorders, and stereotactic pain therapy. Another topic is the currently developed implantable systems or the issue of frameless stereotaxy.
