Osteoarthritis is the most common type of joint disorder. Although estimates of overall prevalence vary geographically and according to the criteria used, it is certain that in individuals over the age of 45, it affects about 20% of men and approximately twice as many women. Although it is not a disease that directly shortens life expectancy, its impact on quality of life is enormous. Patients suffer from pain, often unbearable, and their mobility is limited to varying degrees. Although the causes of osteoarthritis are very diverse and we do not always fully understand the pathophysiological basis of the processes that lead to joint damage, patients can currently be significantly helped with their suffering. In practice, however, the care provided to patients with osteoarthritis is often inadequate; many doctors underestimate the disease and do not always know well the possibilities of current pharmacotherapy and other therapeutic modalities.
