The kidneys have been at the center of interest in diabetology for many years, especially concerning the severity of diabetic nephropathy. However, the relationship between diabetes and the kidneys is significantly more complex – the kidneys are an organ involved in the manifestation of type 2 diabetes, and kidney disease is often associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (cardiorenal syndrome). A significant innovation in recent years has been the introduction of SGLT2 inhibitors – substances capable of reducing renal glucose reabsorption in the kidneys.
