Description
Reduced or increased secretion of pituitary hormones affects a wide range of metabolic processes in the body, and its complete failure is incompatible with life. Diseases of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland represent serious conditions, but in the vast majority of cases, they are benign and treatable. As a result of diseases in this vitally important area of the body, there is often a disruption in the secretion of pituitary hormones. Properly managed treatment of the underlying condition and optimally adjusted replacement therapy allows most patients to return to a full life. Modern endocrinology has available replacement therapy with all the necessary pituitary hormones. This book aims to address when to consider a deficiency of pituitary hormones, how to diagnose it, how to properly set up replacement therapy, and highlight interactions between hormones. It also aims to draw attention to newer preparations in replacement therapy. Care for patients with hypothalamic-pituitary unit impairment requires interdisciplinary collaboration. The publication is intended primarily for endocrinologists and internists, as well as neurologists, ophthalmologists, neurosurgeons, or radiotherapists.
