Description
The seminars on Kundalini yoga presented by Carl Gustav Jung at the Zurich Psychological Club in 1932 are generally considered a milestone in the psychological understanding of Eastern thought and the symbolic transformations of inner experience. Jung found in Kundalini yoga a model for the developmental phases of higher consciousness and interpreted its symbolism from the perspective of the individuation process. Sonu Shamdasani, the editor of this volume, responded to the interest of a new generation in alternative religions and psychological research by combining the original lectures with the discussions that followed. Thus, contemporary readers have the opportunity to get to know the fascination that many intellectuals in pre-war Europe experienced when encountering Eastern spirituality, which revealed itself with each new translation of yoga and tantric texts. Shamdasani reconstructed the seminars based on newly discovered documents and attempted to explain in the introduction why Jung considered the understanding of Eastern thought a key element in the further development of Western psychology. At the same time, he draws attention to some significant questions that arose not only in Jung's mind but also in the minds of the seminar participants: What is the relationship between Eastern religious schools and Western psychotherapy?...
