The whole story began with the novel The Heirs' Hour, the tale of Felicie Lavergne, who passes on to the next generation not only her gray eyes but also an incredible zest for life and survival and a desire for freedom. All of this is inherited by the novel's heroine, Alexandra, Felicie’s granddaughter. She grows up during a time of political unrest and change; she is a child of our era. Cold yet tender, stubborn yet affectionate, a girl who knows how to dream but also has a distinct sense of reality. When she is forced to take on Felicie’s legacy against her will, she bets everything on one card – and loses. However, there is no turning back, and Alexandra knows she must continue what she has started. The third and final part of the saga is a portrait of a woman full of contradictions; it is the story of a large family at the turn of an era.
