Description
The Hussite era is undoubtedly the most researched period of our national history. Since the revival, our historians have perceived Hussitism as a heroic stage of our national self-awareness, and even today we feel a patriotic pride over the notorious film trilogy by Otakar Vávra. The ethical profile of the Hussite warriors faithfully served as a moral support in times when the nation truly needed it, even under regimes that appropriated the glorious traditions in their own way, as evidenced by the distorted portrayal of this movement by Marxist historians as a rise of the masses against the exploiting class. However, many suppressed historical facts remain hidden from our uncritical admiration, casting the virtues of the Taborite warriors in a somewhat more ambiguous light. The turbulent period of the late Middle Ages in our lands continues to yield new insights and unexpected connections, creating a more comprehensive picture of this stage of our national history.
