Description
The professor bets his friend that he will teach a young florist selected speech and behavior, so that in a few months no one will be able to tell her apart from a born duchess. The story of Shaw's play, which carries a faint echo of the Cinderella fairy tale, is therefore very simple, yet it is filled with extraordinarily kind charms, characterized by an unmistakably British, sharp sense of humor – while reading, we feel as if Shaw largely invented British wit with this play. One sentence after another fills us with joyfully excited anticipation of the next event. And the characters are real, living English people. How complicated the web of human relationships is, and how refreshing their form is when the actors come from different social strata! Eliza has the talent and desire to understand more – and despite her youth, she knows that with every change, we not only gain but also lose. To adapt too much to the pressure of the environment means losing one's individuality, losing the most precious thing – oneself. So it is not so surprising that the person with better manners is ultimately not Professor Higgins. However, he learns the most: That no one has the right to another's life, that no one can ever be fully owned. As if in defiance of this truth, the play suggests a happy ending... Shaw is the only author who has been awarded...
