Description

One day, Dr. Bernard Rieux finds a dead rat in front of his office. He soon forgets this seemingly trivial event, but in the following days, rats begin to emerge en masse from their holes and sewers, dying in agony on the sidewalks. Soon, the symptoms of a strange epidemic appear in humans, and the number of victims increases geometrically. Albert Camus noted in his Notebook that the plague has the character of 'a mythical story.' The epidemic itself carries a mythical and philosophical significance – it can be understood as an allegory of the years of occupation, but also, on a much more existential level, as the concretized absurd, which Bernard Rieux, a typical Camus hero, confronts civilly and without heroic gestures.
