Long before Doctor Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly first introduced himself in Patrick Taylor's successful novel 'Doctor, Hurry Up, It's a Matter of Life and Death!' (published in Czech by Leda, 2009), he entertained readers in humorous columns for a Canadian magazine for doctors. With these original stories of the feared doctor, who possesses a rough yet kind humor amidst the somewhat eccentric inhabitants of the Northern Irish village of Ballybucklebo, Czech readers are now gradually becoming acquainted. We will recognize the difficult beginnings of a young, inexperienced doctor in traditional rural life in the post-war period, when Doctor O'Reilly leaves the British naval forces and establishes his own practice.
