Description
This short novel tells the story of the fateful friendship between two adolescent boys in Germany: Konradin, the descendant of an old aristocratic family, and Hans, the son of a Jewish doctor. Their lyrical world of youthful passion is shattered by Nazi brutality, bringing disgust, fear and courageous resistance. The straightforward honesty of youth stands at the threshold of the pathos and sentimentality of adulthood, while the simple narrative gradually reveals the bleak darkness of the era and the hope of a new day. The novel explores the difficult search for moral values at a time when much of German society turned towards Nazi ideology. Reunion is not autobiographical, although it contains autobiographical elements. Uhlman said that the boy in the story was, of course, himself, while the Hohenfels family was a composite portrait of several aristocratic classmates and their parents. A film adaptation appeared in the 1990s, with a screenplay by Nobel Prize winner Harold Pinter. This Czech-language edition is in Czech.
