Description
Dutch doctor Eddy de Wind and his wife Friedel were taken to Auschwitz. Upon arrival, they survived a brutal selection and were assigned to work in the infirmaries. Every day and every hour in the concentration camp was a ruthless struggle for survival – for Eddy, this meant adapting to the unpredictable reactions of the guards, while Friedel had to avert the looming fate of becoming a victim of Joseph Mengele's 'medical' experiments. Their mutual love gave them strength: Friedel and Eddy occasionally managed to slip a note through the fence and, on rare occasions, even dared to share a brief embrace. When the last guards fled at the end of the war, Eddy hid in abandoned barracks and began furiously recording his experiences. This resulted in a completely unique account of life as a prisoner in a extermination camp, capturing the daily struggle for life up close, as well as flashes of joy when Eddy and Friedel managed to catch a glimpse of each other.
