The owner of the Wragby estate, located in a region of coal and iron, returned from the front as an invalid both physically and mentally, and now he torments his wife Connii with methods only benevolent British gentlemen master. It is only a matter of time before the young lady of the castle finds a kindred spirit in the unfeeling environment: it will be Mellors, their eccentric gamekeeper and a man at least two social ranks below her. This story of an outrageous adulterous love, whose intimate passages stirred a storm of outrage from supposedly moral society, dealt a slap to British classism. However, it also brings a refreshing discourse on the awakening rights of women to bodily satisfaction, partnership happiness, and their own life path. Nevertheless, all of this is difficult for the lovesick lady Connii to achieve, as not only has barren hypocrisy embedded itself in the heart of England, but also mining pits, rudeness, and resentment. Lawrence was forced to publish his culminating novel, pursued for over thirty years by island authorities as 'pornographic,' in Italy. A year before the author's death, it was published in France.
