Description
Alexis de Tocqueville, in his famous work Democracy in America (Vol. I 1835, Vol. II 1840), was the first to understand the contradictory nature of equality and democracy, its tendency to "devour itself" through the standardization of conditions and thinking to a kind of tyranny of the majority's mediocrity, which limits individuality and culture and leads to the conformity of the majority. He predicted the arrival of market prosperity, industrial oligarchy, a welfare state, as well as senseless bureaucratic planning and a trend towards centralization. He captured all the essential values of Western civilization, particularly the conflict between freedom and equality, as well as the social significance of religious faith, without which authority is lost and whose absence ultimately threatens political freedom itself. This work of Tocqueville, as simple and comprehensible in its essayistic form as it is profound in its understanding of human nature, society, and history, still serves as a model of analytical work today.
