Description
Welcome back to the picturesque Irish town of Ballybucklebo, among its hearty residents, whose joys and troubles are humorously and lovingly recounted by Patrick Taylor. We once again meet Fingal O'Reilly, the quirky and sometimes gruff, yet dedicated doctor, whom patients visit not only with ailments but also with personal troubles. Now, however, the doctor looks back to his younger years when, as a fresh medical school graduate, he wanted to marry the charming midwife Deirdre Mawhinney. His plans were thwarted by the war; he enlisted as a military doctor on a battleship, and Deirdre... Fortunately, the memories of the time when he was responsible for the health of twelve hundred crew members and treated many wounded have faded and no longer pertain to life in the town. Nevertheless, the doctor and his younger colleague still have to deal with challenging tasks – stopping a measles epidemic or suppressing the occurrence of a strange tropical disease. And then there are problems that definitely do not fall within the realm of medicine, such as the fierce competition among participants in the best homemade fruit pie contest or the dispute between a father and son regarding the son's future. Empathetic and wise O'Reilly seems to have a remedy for every pain and trouble – until a secret from his tumultuous past resurfaces.
