Description
A new, revised, and expanded edition of the Czech etymological dictionary for the general public. For this new edition, new entries have been added, some entries have been fundamentally changed, and approximately 1000 entries have been revised. The century of the first recorded occurrence of a word in Czech is now indicated in the entries. Indo-European roots are reconstructed in their laryngeal form, based on the currently widely accepted laryngeal theory. The latest etymological dictionary of the Czech language brings more than 11,000 basic entries focused on both common vocabulary and newly borrowed and non-standard words, approximately 21,000 derived words, and nearly 64,000 references to words from other languages, an overview of the most important phonetic changes from the Indo-European proto-language to Czech, and a kinship classification of languages worldwide. The dictionary is intended for philologists, lexicographers, historians, archivists, as well as translators, journalists, educators, students, and other cultural workers, as well as all interested members of the general public.
