Description
Yiddish, a language nearly extinct in the East European Hasidic shtetls, has left only a small trace in today's Czech: chutzpah, mishpocheh, kosher, and perhaps also churbes, kibitz, ksindl. So why open such a guide? – And why not? Leo Rosten (Mr. Kaplan Loves His Class) would answer with the obligatory Jewish question to which we don't know what to say. Perhaps because each of those strange words he presents has flair, sitting at the heart of a joke about some human and divine paradox – love, justice, money. The language may be dying, but the Jewish joke is eternal, because it mocks while kindly and wisely nodding its head. After all, everything is different. Is not man both comic and tragic at the same time, does the world not sometimes seem absurd, and do we not need to laugh even through tears?
