The "first modern English author" – the "younger sister of Shakespeare" – these are just two of the many flattering attributes that admirers pay tribute to the author who has captivated the unwavering love of grateful readers for over two centuries. Austen lived in a time when romanticism reigned in literature, with turbulent emotions, dark tragedy, and an excess of sentiment, yet she was gifted with a playful, ironically tinged, comedic vision of the world around her, a sense of moral values, the ability to see into the depths of people's souls, and a sovereign narrative talent. "I write about love and money; what else is there to write about?" she once remarked. And love, in its changing forms – faithful and treacherous, lost and rediscovered, self-centered and selfless – accompanies the delicate Anna, a Cinderella in the family of a foolish, vain baronet, and her sensitive soul is subjected to many trials before she and everyone around her play out their human comedy.
