Description
Súchov is a small village in Moravian Slovakia, where at the end of the nineteenth century, a small group of young artists founded a society called the Súchov Republic, inspired by the Polish so-called Babin Republic initiated by the famous poet Kochanowski, including Matouš Béňa, Josef Hudeček, Joža Uprka, and others. The "Republic" lasted a short time, characterized by its recesive and humorous traits, without any ambition to be a cohesive artistic association or colony. Nevertheless, besides literary and artistic creation, the artists from Súchov also engaged in folklore and strengthening contacts with Slovak writers, such as Jozef Miloslav Hurban. The Olomouc literary theorist, novelist, and translator František Všetička translates a period mosaic from the then-forgotten region on the Moravian-Slovak border in short, pointed chapters.
