Description

The book presents a warning against the possible repetition of life in totalitarianism in the context of coming to terms with the past, based on the life story of a woman, writer, journalist, translator, and theater critic Marie Majerová, who contributed to the equal rights of women and children through her lifelong literary work and political activity. She came from a proletarian background that shaped her. She always longed for the 'most beautiful world,' the realization of which she expected after the completion of the socialist revolution. For a time, she parted ways with the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, but she was always interested in social issues. Through self-study, tenacity, diligence, and her charm, she managed to establish herself both literarily and socially; during the Masaryk Republic, she received the highest literary awards, and in 1947, she was named a national artist, while the communist rulers awarded her political honors. The book explores the writer's development from anarchism, social democracy, communism, and avant-garde to Stalinism; it provides literary-political information from the 19th century to 1967.
