Description

The Poesis edition American poet, essayist, translator, and literary historian Ezra Pound (1885 – 1972) first appeared in the seaside resort of Rapallo near Genoa in 1924. Alongside Venice and a brief episode at his daughter Mary de Rachewiltz's castle in Tyrol, Rapallo was his favorite place in Italy. The memoir texts and essayistic sketches contained in this volume provide two exceptional testimonies about the final period of Pound's life. Professor Massimo Bacigalupo from the University of Genoa became acquainted with the poet through his father, who treated Pound. American poet, critic, essayist, and painter Guy Davenport visited Pound at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington and captured one of his meetings with him and his companion, violinist Olga Rudge, in Rapallo in his prose Ithaka. The book is complemented by verses from Massimo Bacigalupo related to Pound and photographs of Rapallo locations associated with the author of Cantos, a creator whose 'spirit was made of wondrously beautiful crystal' (Michel Butor).
