Description
This Czech-language historical study examines the Normans through the work of American medievalist Charles Homer Haskins, who, together with Joseph Strayer, is considered a founder of the influential New History school. The book is one of Haskins’s two most important studies. Unlike many other authors, Haskins does not portray the Vikings as primitive, murderous raiders and plunderers whose attacks devastated almost the entire civilized world of the Christian West. Instead, he presents the Normans through their highly developed culture and, above all, their carefully elaborated forms of administration, which provide a model example of feudal organization. He explains why contemporary accounts of the Normans are deliberately distorted and reconstructs their society by analyzing the development of the regions that came under Norman rule. Normandy, England and Sicily became distinctive yet remarkably advanced regions for their time, exerting a strong cultural influence on the development of medieval Europe as a whole.
