Description
The contemporary Polish writer and reporter Agata Tuszyńska has traced the footsteps of the famous writer and Nobel Prize laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer, from his birth in the Polish town of Leoncin to his death in Miami Beach, Florida. She utilizes the memories of people who knew the writer as well as those familiar with the environment of old Poland in which he grew up. 'Singer, the only Nobel Prize winner for Jewish literature and a homeless Jewish language,' the author writes, 'the author of Gimpel the Fool, The Family Moskat, and The Juggler of Lublin, came from a Jewish family settled above the Vistula for many years. It can be assumed that had it not been for the war and Hitler's rampage, we could visit his grave in the Jewish cemetery on Goose Street in Warsaw, not far from the places where he spent his childhood and youth. The fact that he ended up across the ocean and his literary maturity fell to America seems to be a matter of historical coincidence.' The book is written engagingly, with the author using the narratives of eyewitnesses, which brings the entire text to life.
